June 11, 2003
BALTIMORE, Md. -- The final 2003 Division I Men's Lacrosse statistical rankings have been released by the NCAA and the Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team is among the leaders in every team statistical category. The Blue Jays finished first in three categories, second in two categories and third and fourth in one category each. In addition, Hopkins had at least one individual place among the top 20 in six of seven individual categories tracked by the NCAA. Hopkins was led throughout the 2003 season by an explosive offense that was well represented in the final NCAA stats. The Blue Jays led the nation in scoring offense (14.00), scoring margin (+7.06 goals per game) and extra man offense (.471/40-of-85). Hopkins finished second nationally in winning percentage (.875/14-2) and man-down defense (.851/40-of-47 killed). The Blue Jays also placed third in scoring defense (6.94) and fourth in faceoff winning percentage (.600/234-of-390). Johns Hopkins was the only team to lead the nation in more than one statistical category and was also the only team to finish in the top four in every category the NCAA tracked. Only one other team even finished in the top four in four categories and only two other teams even finished in the top 10 in five categories. Individually, sophomore attackman Kyle Barrie (Narberth/The Haverford School) finished seventh in points per game (3.80) and 10th in goals per game (2.47). Senior goalie Rob Scherr (Reisterstown, MD/McDonogh) also ranked among the national leaders in two categories as he placed sixth in goals against average (7.12) and 14th in save percentage (.601). In addition to Barrie and Scherr, senior attackman Bobby Benson (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) tied for fifth in goals per game (2.56) and sophomore midfielder Kyle Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Friends) placed eighth in faceoff winning percentage (.626/109-of-174). Junior midfielders Conor Ford (Timonium, MD/St. Paul's) and Kevin Boland (Jessup, MD/Gilman) placed 12th and 19th, respectively in assists per game. Ford averaged 1.75 assists per game, while Boland chipped in with 1.56. Johns Hopkins posted a 14-2 record under third-year coach Dave Pietramala. The Blue Jays will return eight of their top 10 scorers and seven starters next season. - 30 - |
