PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team (7-3) went 3-3 at the Philadelphia Invitational Saturday. The Blue Jays earned wins over Vassar, North Carolina and Sacred Heart. Hopkins lost to Haverford, Rutgers and Penn.

Hopkins opened with a close 14-13 win over Vassar. A 6-3 win for the Blue Jays in the Foil was enough to overcome 5-4 losses in both the Sabre and the Epee. Sophomore Ben Dorfman (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) won all three of his bouts in the Foil. With sophomore David Ferguson (New York, NY/Stuyvesant) won two of his three. The Blue Jays then fell 17-10 to Rutgers. A 7-2 win in the Foil was not enough to overcome losses in the Sabre (8-1) and the Epee (7-2). Sophomore Jimmy Einsiedler (Falmouth, ME/Waynflete School) swept all three of his bouts, with Dorfman winning both of his in the Foil.

In the next match, Hopkins defeated North Carolina 15-12 on the strength of a dominating 9-0 win in the Foil. Dorfman, Einsiedler and senior Nick Marchuk (Ringoes, NJ/The Hun School) each winning all three of their bouts. Hopkins then lost a close 15-14 match to host Haverford. The Blue Jays won both the Foil and the Sabre by 6-3 scores. However, it was not enough to overcome a 9-2 loss in the Epee. Ferguson, Dorfman and Marchuk each went 2-1 in their bouts in the Foil. In the Sabre, freshman Trevor Van Eeuwen went 3-0 to lead the Blue Jays.

Hopkins lost 20-7 to Penn the next round. The Blue Jays lost 8-1 in the Foil, 7-2 in the Sabre and 5-4 in the Epee. Hopkins closed out the invitational with a 17-10 win over Sacred Heart. The Blue Jays swept all three weapons, highlighted by a 7-2 win in the Foil. Ferguson and Dorfman each won their two bouts while Einsielder went 2-1 in the Foil. In the Sabre, Hopkins got wins from Van Eeuwen (2-1), junior Jacob Sand (Laverock, PA/Germantown Friends) (2-0) and senior Andrew Carney (Evantson, IL/Evanston Township) (1-2) to win 5-4.
