ROCKVILLE, MD - Senior Matt Griffin (Glen Mills, PA/Penncrest) earned his second PrestoSports Pride of Maryland Player of the Week honor after leading the Blue Jays to a perfect 2-0 week. Hopkins, now 19-2 overall and 13-1 in the Centennial Conference, won two tight conference games, defeating Swarthmore 63-59 and Haverford 72-68 in double overtime.
Griffin led the Jays this week by averaging 20.5 points and 5.5 rebounds. In the win over Swarthmore on Wednesday, Griffin's lay-up with 1:12 to play tied the game. He then converted two free throws with three seconds on the clock to seal the four-point win. In the double-overtime win at Haverford on Saturday, Griffin scored eleven of his 20 points in the two overtime periods to lead Hopkins to the four-point come-from-behind win. For the week, he shot 75 percent (15-of-20) from the floor and 91.7 percent (11-of-12) from the free throw line with six blocks and three steals. Additionally, the 6'7" senior forward had a streak of 29 consecutive free throws snapped in the second overtime session at Haverford.
Hopkins will stay at home this week for a pair of games at Goldfarb Gym. On Wednesday, McDaniel stops by for a 7 p.m. game. Then on Saturday, Ursinus College visits for a 4 p.m. tilt.
About the PrestoSports Pride of Maryland Player of the Week Award
A newly created award, the PrestoSports Pride of Maryland Player of the Week Award is granted on a weekly basis on behalf of the Pride of Maryland Tournament Committee. Each week, each of the nine Pride of Maryland schools has the ability to nominate one men's basketball player, based upon their on-court accomplishments over the previous seven days. An esteemed panel of media members votes to select the most outstanding player of the group. Simply, the student-athlete with the most votes becomes the PrestoSports Pride of Maryland Player of the Week. All student-athletes who receive votes, but are not named the PrestoSports Pride of Maryland Player of the Week, are then named to the PrestoSports/Pride of Maryland Honor Roll.
