BALTIMORE, MD - Sophomore Russ Berger (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) pitched seven strong innings and junior Joe Urban (Nanticoke, PA/Bishop Hoban) was 3-for-3 with three runs batted in to lead the Johns Hopkins baseball team to a 10-1 victory over visiting Washington College this afternoon. The Blue Jays improved to 19-4 overall and 6-0 in the Centennial Conference with their seventh consecutive win and head coach Bob Babb moved to within one victory of the 600-mark for his career. The Shoremen fell to 10-9-1 overall and 1-5 in CC play.
Berger improved to 3-0 on the year and lowered his ERA to 1.76 as he allowed just one run on five hits in seven innings. He cruised through the first six innings, giving up just two hits, before Washington scored its only run in the seventh. Freshman Jason Hochfelder (Briarcliff, NY/Hackley) pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Berger.
The Blue Jays picked up three runs in the bottom of the first inning on one hit, two walks, two errors, and a hits batsman. JHU added three runs in the third as junior Jay Cieri (Pine Brooke, NJ/Montville) led off with a double and sophomore Carl Ippolito (Ewing, NJ/Pennington School) followed with an RBI double. Urban then drove home Ippolito with a single and scored later in the inning on a double play.
Urban drove home Ippolito in the fourth with a single to give Hopkins a 8-0 lead and smashed a double off the left field wall in the sixth inning to drive home senior Karl Sineath (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson), who had doubled earlier in the inning. Sophomore Brian Morley (Tappan, NY/Don Bosco Prep) provided the final tally with a solo home run in the seventh inning, his third of the season. Morley has home runs in each of the last two games and the Blue Jays have hit 18 home runs in the last six games.
Adam Golding allowed eight runs on six hit in four innings for Washington to fall to 0-1 on the season. Mike Scozzafava was 3-for-4 with a double, while Jay McEvoy added a double and scored the only run for the Shoremen.
Babb can get his 600th career victory on Saturday as the Blue Jays host Franklin & Marshall in a key Centennial doubleheader starting at noon. F&M was 15-6 overall and 5-0 in the Centennial entering play this afternoon. Babb currently sports a 599-235-8 (.716) career record in 23 seasons at Hopkins.
