Runs Cross in Bunches as Baseball Blue Jays Split with Augsburg
March 21, 2006 CHANDLER, AZ - Augsburg dialed up 10 runs on 11 hits to record a 10-5 game one victory, but Johns Hopkins returned the favor by pounding the Auggies 13-0 in the second game of a non-conference double dip on Tuesday afternoon at Snedigar Complex. Both games lasted seven innings. The Auggies did the bulk of their game one damage in the first inning, sending five runs to across the plate with two outs. Four two-out singles and a two-RBI double by junior shortstop Matt Johnson did the trick for Augsburg in jumping out to the early lead. In the fifth inning, the advantage grew to 10-1 as the Auggies pushed across four more runs, including two more with two outs. Sophomore center fielder Jeff Stomberg and senior second baseman Andy Nelson drove home each of the runs. Nelson landed a two-run single with two down to build the nine-run lead. For the game, Augsburg scored eight of its ten runs with two outs. Stomberg and junior first baseman Nate Jackson picked up two hits each in the winning effort. With just three outs left to work with, the Blue Jays' bats came to life, pushing across four runs before the Auggies could record an out. Junior catcher Rob Sanzillo doubled the first two runs home while senior right fielder Gary Rosenberg and sophomore third baseman Todd Emr drove in runs of their own to cut the lead in half, 10-5. The hot hitting continued in the second game, as Hopkins batted around in the top of the first inning, opening up a 6-0 lead. The Blue Jays plated two more in the second inning and three in the fifth.
In the offensive onslaught, senior second baseman Corey Gleason led the way, driving in four runs in his first four trips to the plate. Junior right fielder Nick Venezia socked three doubles in his first three plate appearances, picking up a pair of RBI in the first inning. Sophomore center fielder Rob Pietroforte crossed the plate three times in the first five frames, a team-high. Sophomore right Brian Duddie made the lead stand, crafting five shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out two. Duddie posted his first win of the season. Sophomore righty Patrick Steffee stepped in for two innings of hitless relief to polish off the second combined shutout of the season for the Blue Jays. The split moves Johns Hopkins to 8-3-1 on the season while the Auggies enjoy a 7-2 record. |
