Hopkins Sweeps Doubleheader Versus St. Joseph's
March 16, 2003
FT. MYERS, FL - The Johns Hopkins baseball team continued its excellent start to the 2003 season with a doubleheader sweep of St. Joseph's College (ME) Friday afternoon and evening. JHU improved to 8-0 on the young season with a 9-5 win the first game and a 4-0 win in the nightcap.
Freshman Jim Flannery (Rocky River, OH/St. Edward) pitched a one-hit shutout in the second game to earn his first victory as a Blue Jay. He allowed just one single with two outs in the top of the seventh inning before closing the game with a groundout to second base. Flannery finished his first career start with 13 strikeouts and three walks.
Junior second baseman David Luongo (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) provided the only offense the Blue Jays would need with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to score freshman Corey Gleason (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) from second base. Sophomore designated hitter Dave Montegari (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade) added insurance runs with a towering, two-run home run, his first of the year, to center field in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Sven Stafford (Evanston, IL/Evanston) also drove in a run with a single in the fifth.
In the opener, Hopkins scored three runs in the top of the first on a RBI single from sophomore Eric Nigro (Randolph, NJ/Taft Prep) and a two-run single from junior Brian Morley (Tappan, NY/Don Bosco Prep). After St. Joseph's took the lead in the bottom of the inning with a grand slam, the Blue Jays regained the lead with two runs in the top of the third.
Nigro drove in sophomore Mike Spiciarich (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) with a single to center and scored one batter later on a single to right by Morley. Sophomore Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh School) added a two-run home run, his third of the year, as JHU scored three more runs in the fifth to take an 8-4 advantage.
Freshman Andrew Bail (Chicago, IL/Latin School) picked up his first career win with one inning in relief of starter Jason Thayer (Finksburg, MD/Westminster). Bail allowed one run and two hits while striking out two. Junior Matt Righter (Clarion, PA/Lawrenceville Prep) continued his solid start to the season with 2.1 scoreless innings. Righter struck out four batters and has allowed just three hits in 9.2 innings this season.
