Hopkins Nabs Two Victories at Division II Water Polo Tournament

HOPKINS NABS TWO VICTORIES AT DIVISION III WATER POLO TOURNAMENT

BALTIMORE — Johns Hopkins' water polo team nabbed two victories on the opening day of the Division III Water Polo Tournament hosted by JHU on Saturday, September 30. The Blue Jays defeated Grove City College 17-6 and finished off Washington & Jefferson, 15-3. The two wins improved JHU's record to 6-9 overall.

Ten different Hopkins' players scored against Grove City led by Ryan Ford (So., Almaden, CA/Leland) and Geoffrey McCann (Fr., Menlo Park, CA/St. Francis) who each recorded three goals. Senior Zaman Mirzadeh (Davis, CA/Davis), senior Mark McCoy (Danville, CA/San Ramon), and freshman Matt Shindel (Whittier, CA/Sonona) all tallied two goals. Paul Ramaley (So., Greenwich, CT/Greenwich), sophomore Fred Kingston (Ijamsville, MD/Urbana), Adam Drucker (Fr., Lafayette, CA/Campolindo), freshman Parker Emmott (Hillsborough, CA/Menlo), and Sajad Moradi (Fr., Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall College) each posted one goal.

Junior goalkeeper Mark McGory (Santa Barbara, CA/Dos Pueblos) made 10 saves, while goalie Craig Smith (Fr., San Clemente, CA/San Clemente) notched nine deflection. The Blue Jays led from start to finish and even shut out the Wolverines, 5-0, in the second period.

JHU's defense was in the spotlight against Washington & Jefferson, blanking the Presidents' in the first and second quarters. Ford, Mirzadeh, Kingston, McCann, Shindel, freshman Jared Bluntzer (Houston, TX/Clear Lake) all scored for Hopkins. Smith and McGory each registered 10 saves in the contest.

In other action from Saturday, W&J defeated Grove City and Penn State Behrend, 10-9 and 17-5, respectively. Villanova topped Penn State Behrend and Grove City, 13-11 and 17-15, respectively.

The tournament continues at Johns Hopkins on Sunday, October 1. JHU opens with Penn State Behrend at 9:30 a.m. and ends the day with Villanova at 2:00 p.m.
