Women's BasketballLady Falcons Erupt In Second Half To Defeat Lady Golden Bulls, 50-37

SAC Freshmen forwards Chanel Kinard and Allison Sikes scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, and Saint Augustine's College caught fire after a frigid first half to stun CIAA Western Division basketball leader Johnson C. Smith 50-37 at Emery Gymnasium on Tuesday (Jan. 22). The Lady Falcons (12-5, 8-2 CIAA, 2-2 Western Division) trailed 14-8 at halftime after making 3 of 27 shots for 11.1 percent. The 8 points were a season-low in the first half for the Lady Falcons. The Lady Golden Bulls made 6 of 29 shots for 20.7 percent. The Lady Falcons came alive in the second half, outscoring the Golden Bulls 42-23 to take the victory. Led by 10 points apiece from Kinard and Sikes, the Lady Falcons connected on 14 of 31 shots for 45.2 percent. Meanwhile, the Lady Golden Bulls made 7 of 29 shots for 24.1 percent. Free throw shooting was also a thorn in the gold and blue's side as the Lady Golden Bulls connected on just 10 of 24 attempts. They also committed 28 turnovers compared to that of 19 for SAC. For the game, the Lady Falcons shot 29.3 percent and held the Lady Golden Bulls to 22.4 percent shooting. The 37 points and 22.4% shooting were a season low for the Lady Golden Bulls, who got 12 points from Kyria Buford (Charlotte, N.C.). Sikes also grabbed 9 rebounds and freshman guard Lakiesha White contributed 7 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks for the Lady Falcons. Buford pulled down a career high 14 rebounds for the Lady Golden Bulls, who won the battle of the boards 59-40. JCSU moves on to face the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union on Thursday, Jan. 24 at 5:30 p.m. |
