Durham, N.C. - It was a beautiful North Carolina day for football but a horrible day for Johnson C. Smith.

Shaw University scored on the first play of its second possession and never looked back on the way to a 45-21 route of the Golden Bulls at Durham County Stadium.

Shaw running back Alan Atwater scored three times on runs of 17, 7 and 7 yards to give the Bears a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter. He finished the game with 18 carries for 96 yards.

The Bears extended their lead to 28-0 on a 72-yard pass from Travis Robinson to DeAndre Okonji.

JCSU finally got on the board when Jonathan Metcalf scored on a 1-yard run at 4:35 in the second quarter.

SU expanded their lead to 31-7 when they ended an 11-play, 73-yard drive with a Ryne Powell 29-yard field goal with just :04 remaining before halftime.

Raymon Williams led the Shaw rushing attack with 17 carries for 177 yards and one TD.

It was the worst defensive effort for JCSU for the season. The Golden Bulls gave up 453 yards in total offense despite Shaw accumulating 207 yards in penalties.

The Bears had more penalty yards than JCSU had in total offense (207 to 200).

Injuries were devastating for JCSU. Two starters, running back Marco Kirven and defensive back Fred Hoskins, both went out with injuries during the game. The Golden Bulls were also playing without Elijah Ashley who was lost for the season last week in the game against St. Augustine's.

There were some positives for JCSU.

Metcalf's score was the first rushing touchdown of his career and B.J Revis had his first career interception stopping a Shaw drive in the end zone early in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Carlton Richardson finished the game with 190 yards in total offense, completing eight passes for 103 yards and rushing 16 times for another 87 yards and a touchdown.

JCSU falls to 2-3 overall (1-1 CIAA; 1-1 Western Division). Shaw improves to 3-2 overall (2-0 CIAA; 1-0 Div).

The Golden Bulls will try and regroup next week when they host the Panthers of Virginia Union University at the Irwin Belk Complex, Saturday, October 6. Kickoff is set for 6:00pm
