Heartbreaking Loss to Bison on 'Senior Day'



Höhne connects for 20 in loss to Bison.

Fort Wayne, IN - The Mastodons finished a tough first half up by two, 44-42 but the Bison of North Dakota State rallied back in the second half to take the win from the 'Dons, 85-80 on 'Senior Day' in the Gates Center.

Prior to the game the IPFW Women's Basketball program recognized their four graduating seniors Ashley Johnson, Starla Williams, Pavla Pletková, and Hilary O'Connell. All four would make their final start in a Mastodon uniform today.

The first half started off as a back-and-forth battle for the first five minutes. A three-pointer by Johnna Lewis-Carlisle would put the 'Dons ahead by five with 14:57 left, 14-9.

The Mastodons kept rolling from there, going on a 6-0 run to take their first double-digit lead, 20-9. A shot by North Dakota State would temporarily take IPFW out of a double-digit lead but Juliane Höhne hit a lay-up to once again put IPFW up by 10 with 11:03 to go in the half.

The Bison would slowly begin to chip away at IPFW's lead and a late 9-2 run would end the half with IPFW up by two, 44-42.

The Mastodons extended their lead to five after a good layup and free throw by Ashley Johnson to start the second half. The Bison would go on a 6-1 run to tie the game up at 48 with 18:35 in the half.

IPFW would make another run, 9-2 to go up by seven with 14:53 left, 57-50. But once again the Bison would answer back, going on a 6-0 run of their own to cut the spread to one, 57-56 at the 12:40 mark.

With 7:07 left in the half the 'Dons would be up by six, 67-61. The Bison would once again rally, going on a 14-8 run to tie the game up at 75 with 2:24 left. Höhne hit a layup to put the 'Dons ahead by two, but NDSU answered back, tying the game once again, 77-77.

Free throws were key to the Bison in the last 30 seconds as they hit all eight chances to push ahead by five for the win, 85-80.

Lewis-Carlisle led the 'Dons with 25 points. She was 9 of 17 from the field and 4 of 5 from the charity line. She pulled down four boards, three steals and dished out five assists.

Höhne scored 20 points, matching a previous personal best. She was 10-16 from the field and pulled down eight boards and two  blocks.

Johnson rounded out her career with 16 points, 1,153 for her career, placing her 8th All-Time for IPFW. She added five assists and was 4 of 7 from the free throw line.

The Bison were led by Emily Moran with 25 points, she was 6 of 13 from beyond the arc. Lisa Bue added 19 points and eight boards with Brenda Slyt not far behind with 17 points. Amanda Girodat added 11 points for the Bison.

The Mastodons wrapped up the season with a final record of 12-17. The 'Dons broke the previous Division I wins record this season and doubled their win total from the previous two seasons.
