Azab Highlights Redbirds' Performance at Butler Twilight

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Sophomore Carl Azab recorded a season and personal best time in the 400-meter hurdles, highlighting the Illinois State track and field team's performance at the Butler Twilight Saturday at the Michael A. Carroll Track and Field Stadium. Azab finished the race in 54.37 seconds and in second place at the Redbirds' final tune-up before the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships next weekend.

Head coach Elvis Forde felt that the team had a high level of effort and hopes that it can translate into strong performances at the Valley Championships.

"I thought that we had a good effort today," said Forde. "The weather was nice and it was good for the kids we brought today to get another chance to compete. We hope that they will be able to continue to work hard and put up some good performances when we travel to Drake for the conference championships next week."

The women's squad was led by sophomore Brianna Officer, who finished in first place in the 400-meter dash. Officer crossed the finish line in 56.39 seconds, recording a season-best. Junior Suzy Turner finished in sixth in the 1,500-meter run, while junior Frannie Epps tossed a distance of 116-10 feet in the javelin. In the 100-meter dash, juniors Kyndra Curtin (12.39) and Melissa Clarke (12.44) finished in third and fourth, respectively.

Sophomore Samuel Watts also had a strong performance, winning the 100-meter dash. Watts finished the race in 11.15 seconds in his first meet back after missing the previous three competitions due to injury. Sophomore Luke Heinrichs also ran in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 11.30 and in third. Heinrichs also ran a season-best in the 200-meter dash (22.08) and placed fifth.

 

 

Junior DeAndre Tillman ran a season-best in the 200-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 22.07 seconds. Tillman also competed in the 400-meter dash, finishing in third with a time of 48.82 sec. Sophomores Brian Syring (15:33.54) and Ryan Lay (15:57.56) each recorded season and personal-best finishes in the 5,000-meter run, ending the race in 11th and 18th, respectively.

Junior Jason Field won the pole vault, clearing a height of 15-09.00 feet. Senior TJ Fakehinde was the winner of the high jump, successfully leaping a height of 6-08.75 feet. Junior Darren Price finished in third in the javelin, tossing a distance of 164-04 ft.

The Redbirds will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for the MVC Championships on May 11-13.
