Women's Basketball Uses Late Run To Secure 77-59 Victory Over Detroit

Chicago, Ill. - At various moments it seemed as if the University of Illinois at Chicago women's basketball team was about to put away Detroit, only to have the Titans creep back into the contest time and time again. UIC, however, put a stop to that following a three-pointer by Detroit forward Melissa Harakas with 5:40 left in the contest to cut the Flames then six-point lead into a 55-52 advantage. The Flames then went on a 22-7 run to finish the contest to earn the 77-59 Horizon League victory over Detroit at the UIC Pavilion on Saturday evening. "We really to come out and do some good things to regain control of the game," UIC head coach Lisa Ryckbosch said. "For the first time we smelled blood and went after them. Senior guard LeKesha Williams scored a game-high 21 points and picked up her 1,000th career point, marking the second Flames player to achieve that accomplishment in as many games. Senior forward Jaysie Chambers reached that milestone against Cleveland State on Thursday night. The Flames also received solid performances from senior forward Jaysie Chambers (14 points, nine rebounds), sophomore forward Chastity Quinn (10 points, 12 rebounds) and senior center Zsuzsa Tarnai (10 points). With the victory, UIC improves to 9-8 overall and 3-3 in the Horizon League, while the Titans fall to 5-12 on the campaign and 3-3 in league action. Junior forward Lori Wild scored a team-high 17 points for Detroit, while teammate Nicole Anaejionu added 10 points for the Titans. UIC will be back in action on Thursday, Jan. 23rd, as they will travel to Rogers Park to take on cross-town and Horizon League rival, Loyola at 7:00 p.m. in the Joseph Gentile Center. |
