Indianapolis, Ind. - The UIC track and field team concluded competition at the 2006 Horizon League Outdoor Championships on Friday at Michael Carroll Stadium with the men's squad taking third while the women's team placed sixth. All in all, the Flames captured three individual event and one relay title, while sophomore Terell Williams was crowned the decathlon champion.

On the men's side, Williams battled his way to the decathlon title, totaling 5340 points. He won five of the 10 events in the two-day competition, including the discus and javelin on Friday.

Junior Trent Thompson gave the Flames their first running event championship of the day, winning the 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of 49.09. UIC would go on to capture the 4x100 relay crown with a time of 42.21.

Senior Nick Gazis, an NCAA Regional qualifier in the discus, added a Horizon League title to his resume by winning the event with a toss of 50.30m. He would also take fourth in the shot put with a heave of 14.94m.

Sophomore Idara Essien gave the women's team its lone event title on Friday by winning the triple jump. The Wheaton, Ill., native, who won the league title in the triple jump at the indoor championships, posted a distance of 11.73m.

In other notable performances, senior Sara O'Mara took third in the shot put (12.59) and junior Jessica Cwiak placed fifth in the heptathlon.

Senior Brandon Cook was the runner-up in the men's 100-meter dash with a season-low time of 10.83. He would later take third in the 200-meter dash (22.09).
 

 

Sophomore Mike Grossman placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.40.
