Men's Tennis Pounds Penguins, 6-1
March 14, 2004 Youngstown, Ohio The University of Illinois at Chicago men's tennis team won its second match in a row on Saturday, defeating Youngstown State 6-1 in their Horizon League opener at the Boardman Tennis Center. UIC (3-8, 1-0 Horizon League) was stellar all-around, sweeping the doubles point and taking five out of six singles contests to down the Penguins. Artsem Burmistrau won his fifth straight match at No. 1 singles, easily downing RJ Pepino 6-1, 6-1. The Flames got superb singles performances from Karol Zarucki, John Cincola, Yevgen Ryeznik and Paul Glendenning, who all earned strong wins. Pat Zufan, who moved up to the No. 4 spot after playing strong all season, turned in a solid effort in defeat, losing a heartbreaking 7-6 (10) 6-3 thriller Brian Meek. "It was a good team effort," said UIC Head Coach Hans Neufeld. "First Horizon League match and [we get] the win." The Flames won the doubles point for the third straight week.
UIC is back in action on Saturday, March 20th to take on Indianapolis in Indianapolis, Ind. at 3 p.m.
