UIC's Torres and Magee Claim Individual Titles In First Day Of MCC Swimming And Diving Championships

Milwaukee, Wis - Paul Torres and Mike Magee both claimed individual league titles on Thursday to highlight opening day action for the UIC men's and women's swimming and diving team at the 2001 Midwestern Collegiate Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Both the men's and the women's squads sit in fourth place in team competition. The men's team owns 147 points, which places them behind Wright State (235), Cleveland State (184) and UW-Milwaukee (148). The women's team, meanwhile, tallied 112.50 points in day one and trails UW-Milwaukee (249), Wright State (243) and UW-Green Bay (197) in the standings. With a time of 1:52.34, Torres touched the wall first in the 200-yard Individual Medley to give the Flames their first championship of the three-day event. UIC's Enric Claret was also strong in the 200 IM, placing fourth with a time of 1:54. 64. In the men's one-meter diving competition the Flames took home first and second-place honors as Mike Magee took the title with a score of 276.65. Senior Chuck Rock was the runner-up with a final tally of 271.25.
