London, England- Just over four years ago Jay DeMerit patrolled Flames Field, leading a stingy UIC defense and closing out a collegiate career that included two NCAA Tournament appearances.

Fast forward to this Sunday, where DeMerit will patrol Millenium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, wearing a Watford shirt and competing for a chance to play in arguably the greatest professional soccer league in the world.

DeMerit and Watford will take on Leeds United in Sunday's Coca-Cola Championship play-off final, with the winner earning a promotion from the second division to the English Premier League.

A gritty center back who is one of Watford's most popular players, DeMerit was the focus of a USA Today article on Thursday documenting his journey from UIC to his current opportunity to play on one of the grandest stages of soccer.
