Baseball Roughed Up By Saint Louis In 15-6 Loss
March 11, 2001 St. Louis, Mo. - The UIC baseball team was hit hard early against Saint Louis Sunday afternoon as it dropped its third straight game to the Billikens, 15-6. The Flames fall to 3-12 with the loss while Saint Louis improves to 8-5. UIC will now head to Lawrence, Kan., for its spring break trip and face Kansas, Michigan and Eastern Michigan in the upcoming week. This afternoon, Saint Louis jumped out to a 4-0 lead off of Flames' starter Gene Rausch (Kasson, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville) in the bottom of the first as two hits, two errors and one walk plated the Billikens' first four runs of the game. Saint Louis then came back to score eight more runs in the third inning while knocking Rausch out of the game. The Billikens strung together eight hits, including a three-run home run by SLU designated hitter Mike Orrico, to up their lead to 12-0. UIC got its first runs of the game in the fourth inning as a double by Weber Bowen (Minneapolis, Minn./Blake School) and singles by John Rosner (Ottawa, Ill./Marquette), Kyle Robinson (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles) and Kevin Nelson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) sparked the three-run rally. The Billikens got those runs back, however, in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 15-3 lead and the Flames' three runs in the eighth inning reached the game's final margin.
Rausch, who surrendered eight runs on five hits, took the loss, his second of the year, while Saint Louis starter Dan Shouse picked up victory of the season.
