Six Errors Costs UIC Baseball In 8-3 Loss At Indiana
March 3, 2001 Bloomington, Ind. - The UIC baseball team committed six infield errors Saturday afternoon and gave up five unearned runs as Indiana took an 8-3 win. The Hoosiers got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning as Indiana leadoff hitter Mark Calkins singled and advanced to second on a failed pick-off attempt by Flames' starter Wes Gilliam. A groundout moved Calkins and he then scored on a passed ball. IU upped its lead to 2-0 in the fourth on another unearned run. The Flames, who went hitless through the first four innings, finally got their bats going in the fifth, plating two runs to knot the game at 2-2. Weber Bowen led off the fifth frame with a double to center field, advanced to third on a groundout by Bob Rosinski and scored on a fielder's choice by Chris Kerpan. J.P. Moran and Curtis Granderson kept the rally going with back-to-back singles to score Kerpan. Gilliam pitched very well for the Flames through the fifth inning as he held the Hoosiers to just one hit and struck out seven while surrendering two unearned runs. In the sixth, however, the Hoosiers greeted new UIC pitcher Steve Carlson with five runs on only two hits. Carlson, however, didn't help his cause in the inning as he issued five walks as Indiana upped its lead to 7-2. The Hoosiers scored one more run off of Carlson in the eighth and then UIC added a solo score in the top of the ninth as Moran's double to left center field scored Bowen from second.
Sunday's game between UIC and Indiana has been cancelled due to forecasted inclement weather.
