Box Score

Georgia State held off the UIC baseball team this afternoon, 5-3, to sweep the three-game series between the two schools.

The Panthers struck for one unearned run in the bottom of the second before UIC grabbed the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Shortstop Sean McNichols opened the fourth with a double and reached third on an Eric Duke single. Bob Rosinski then grounded out to shortstop, but was able to advance the runners, sending McNichols home for the Flames' first run. Catcher Weber Bowen the drilled a double to right field to drive Duke in, giving UIC the 2-1 lead.

Georgia State (5-2) quickly reclaimed the lead, however, putting two runs on the board in the bottom half of the fourth inning and one more in the fifth to go up 5-2. UIC added one run in the eighth, but Panthers' reliever Kevin Hopper retired the side in the ninth to earn the save and give Georgia State the victory.

Sophomore righty Kevin Ryan earned the start for the Flames and pitched three complete innings without giving up a hit while striking out one. Reliever Brad Goebbert was pegged with the loss, his first of the year, as he surrendered six hits and four earned runs in 4.1 innings on the mound.

UIC (1-5) will head to Cookeville, Tenn., next weekend for a three-game series with Tennessee Tech, with the first game starting Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
