Final Stats

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' softball team lost a doubleheader in the first day of the Trinity University Classic, falling 2-1 to No. 3 Chapman and 10-4 to the host Trinity.

Hardin-Simmons junior hurler Arin Spence kept the high-powered Panthers at bay with 13 strikeouts in the game. She scattered six hits in six innings of work, giving up both runs. She fell to 1-1 on the year. Chapman placed third at the Division III World Series last season and returned 10 starters and three All-Americans.

Chapman (8-2) scratched a run in the third with a pair of hits and in the fifth scored again on a single, stolen base and ground out and wild pitch.

The Cowgirls had a rally in the seventh when senior centerfielder Nicole Cortez singled and moved to second on a throwing error and to third on a ground out. Spence grounded out to second knocking in Cortez. Sayde Hill then singled with two outs, but a foul out ended the rally and the game.

In the nightcap the Cowgirls jumped to a 4-1 lead, but six errors proved costly for HSU. Megan Murrey fell to 1-1 on the year, after she allowed five runs (three earned) over five innings. Courtney Stewart led the Cowgirls with two RBIs and a pair of hits.

HSU (1-2) will play UT-Tyler and Trinity in the final day of the Classic on Saturday.
