TEMPLE. Texas - Hardin-Simmons' men's golf team shot a 319 and sits in fifth place after the first round of the UMHB Spring Invitational Monday afternoon in Temple. The two-day, 36-hole event is being played over a par-72, 6,943-yard layout at Wildflower Country Club.

The Cowboys are just six shots off the 313 fired by leader Mary Hardin-Baylor. Texas Lutheran is in second with a 316 and Southwestern (Kan.) is in third with a 317. McMurry is fourth with a 318 and HSU is tied with LeTourneau at 319.

Paul Schaub and Chris Clifton each shot 79's to lead the Cowboys. J.C. Eagle shot 80 and Michael Weehunt fired an 81. Aaron Lesley shot an 84.

The tournament wraps up with 18 more holes tomorrow. Teams will tee off with progressive tee times starting at 8:30 a.m.
