NEW ORLEANS - Eighth-seeded Houston advanced to the quarterfinals after claiming a 3-2 victory over No. 9 USF at the Conference USA Volleyball Tournament on Friday at Fogelman Arena. The Cougars improves to 11-18 on the season and will now face No. 1 Cincinnati in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 8 p.m. After nearly claiming the upset, USF falls to 12-20 overall.

"This is a great win for us," said Houston head coach Bill Walton. "This is a very young squad, so for them to come out and be competitive in all five games was great. Our setting let us down in games three and four, but Kelly (McAnelly) came back into the game and really helped us in the fifth. We probably had our best blocking effort of the season and were able to clinch the win."

After the first three matches in the tournament were won in three games, the Cougars also looked like they were going to take a 3-0 victory after claiming the first two games. However, USF tied up the series winning games three and four. In the final game, it was all Houston as the Cougars captured the match with a score of 15-9.

Cinthia Piva led Houston with a double-double performance of 26 kills and 17 digs. Kelly McAnelly followed with 23 kills, while Loure Dews added 13 for a .310 attack percentage.

For USF, Fran Pozzi led three USF players in double-digit kills as Shameka Mitchell had 22, along with nine digs and Johari Williams had her first career double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs.

The C-USA Tournament continues with the quarterfinal rounds on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. (CST).
