Divers Post Three of Top Four Marks on Platform at A&M Invite

HOUSTON and COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The University of Houston diving team earned three of the four highest scores Sunday afternoon on the platform during the Texas A&M Invitational at the Student Rec Center Natatorium. Junior captain Azul Almazan led all divers with 430.25 points, while teammate Anna Kiess was a close second with 415.60 points. The Cougar duo was the only divers to score more than 400 points in the event. Sophomore Rachel Gitelson finished fourth in the diving event with 374.35 points. On the swimming side, sophomore Szintia Szanto finished second in the 200-yard butterfly to lead the Cougar Swimming team to a second-place showing at the Cougar Invitational at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium. Rice won the team championship with 1,366 points, while the host Cougars took second place with 796 points. New Orleans finished third with 208 points, and Incarnate Word rounded out the field with 200 points. After finishing second in the preliminaries earlier in the morning, Szanto took second place again in the event with a clocking of 2:05.50 to lead the Cougars in the individual events. The Cougars' 400-yard freestyle relay team of Meagan Wien, Stacey Williams, Amy Duke and Kristin Bay finished second with a time of 3:31.62. Bay finished fourth in the 100-yard freestyle, while Tatjana Banjeglav was a fourth-place finisher in the 200-yard breaststroke. Williams also finished fourth in the 200-yard butterfly. The Cougars return to action on Dec. 2 when they compete at the U.S. Open Swimming Championship in San Antonio, Texas. From there, the team heads north to meet Kansas and Harvard in a dual meet in Lawrence, Kan. on Dec. 3-4.
