May 11, 2006

HOUSTON - University of Houston senior second baseman Jaci Gonzalez was named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District VI First Team Thursday as announced by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).

This is the second Academic All-District First Team honors for Gonzalez. She was All-District First Team in November for her accomplishments on the volleyball court

Gonzalez is hitting .267 this season with two home runs and nine RBIs on the softball diamond this season. She has reached base in 28 of 40 games when in the batting lineup, including 14 of her last 18 outings.

To be eligible for Academic All-District honors, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. District VI includes the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.

Gonzalez is eligible for CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America accolades, which will be announced later this month.

The Cougars play an elimination game at the Conference USA Championship against East Carolina. First pitch against the Pirates is slated for 12:30pm at the Donna J. Hardesty Softball Complex on the Tulsa University campus.
