Cougar softball drops game one to Louisville

HOUSTON - Despite getting five and one third innings of one-hit ball from senior Jenny Johnson, the University of Houston softball team dropped the opening game of a double header 6-2 to the Louisville Cardinals Saturday afternoon at The Cougar Softball Complex.

Johnson entered the game in the second inning with two outs and shut down the Cardinals offense, but the damage had been done with a five run outburst earlier in the inning.

Louisville loaded the bases with one out on back-to-back bunt singles off of Houston starter Jamie Falco before taking a 3-0 lead on a flare just out of he reach of shortstop Jaci Gonzalez and center fielder Kim Nesloney. The next batter Sara Bausher, took advantage of the Cardinals fortune, hitting a three-run home run to give Louisville a 6-0 lead.

Houston picked up two runs in the bottom of the third inning when Kristen Glowacz smacked a double to left field, which scored Nesloney from first base. Jenilee Skender then knocked in Glowacz with a single to left field but was thrown out at first base after attempting to reach second base. The relay throw from Cardinal left fielder Shannon Nord stopped Skender in her track s and she was tagged out at first base before she could get back.

Neither team did could get much going after the third inning as both pitchers kept the opposing offenses in check.

Falco dropped to 6-2 on the year, giving up five earned runs on five hits in one and two thirds innings of work while Aja Sherman improved to 11-2 on the year with the win.
