Golf in Second Place at Del Walker Intercollegiate

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Sophomore Jordan Irwin and junior Pablo Acuna each finished the first day of the Del Walker Intercollegiate at 4-under-par 138 to stand in a tie for third place and help lead the University of Houston golf team to a second-place showing through the first 36 holes Thursday. Irwin fired a career-best 67 in the opening round to better his previous low by two strokes and finished his day with an even-par 71 on the 6,633-yard course at Virginia Country Club. Acuna fired back-to-back sub-par rounds of 70 and 68 for his impressive score. Both Cougar linksters stood four strokes behind Dawie VanDer Walt of Lamar and two strikes behind Kansas' Gary Woodard on the individual leaderboard. As a team, the Cougars posted consistent scores of 281 and 282 for a total of 563 to stand in second place, eight strokes behind first-day leader Lamar. Colorado State (569), Washington State (574) and UC Santa Barbara (575) rounded out the Top Five team leaders. Senior Kevin Newman (143) and junior Ricky Romano (144) each finished among the Top 20 individual leaders after the first day. Senior Zach Mowbray posted a score of 147 and was tied for 30th.
