Golf in 12th Place After First Day of U.S. Collegiate Championships

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Houston golf team stood in 12th place Sunday after the first round of the U.S. Collegiate Championships.

The Cougars opened up the tournament with a team score of 304 through the first 18 holes but stood 15 shots behind leader Texas.

The second round begins Monday morning at the 7,138-yard, par-72 course at the Tucson National Golf Course.

Individually, senior Brett Callas led the way for the Cougars and was tied for 18th after the first day. The Huffman, Texas, native fired a 74 2-over-par through 18 holes, while senior John Wine tied for 34th at 4-over-par 76.

Freshmen Zach Mowbray and Kevin Newman both tied for 46th after shooting a 5-over-par 77. Simon Robinson tied for 53rd at 6-over-par 78.

Texas grabbed the team lead after the first day with a score of 289, four strokes better than second place Arizona State. Conference-USA rival TCU and host school Arizona were tied for third.

Individually, Jason Hartwick of Texas fired a 5-under-par 67 to stand atop the leaderboard.
