AIKEN, S.C. - The University of Houston golf team stood in third place Monday with a team score of 13-over-par 513 after the first day of the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate.

Individually, sophomore Jordan Irwin, the defending individual champion, was tied with two others at 1-under-par 141 entering Tuesday's final round on the 6,565-yard, par-71 course at Palmetto Golf Club.

The tournament wraps up with the final 18 holes, beginning at 7:30 a.m. (CST), Tuesday

Houston is looking for its fourth consecutive team championship to open the 2006 spring season. It is the first time since 1984-85 that the Cougars have reeled off that many consecutive titles.

The Cougars posted a team score of 288 in the morning round and followed that with a score of 293 in the afternoon session. Virginia Commonwealth grabbed the first-day lead at 574, while College of Charleston was in second place at 577.

Furman (582), host South Carolina-Aiken (584), East Carolina (585), Francis Marion (591), Maryland (593), Rhode Island (599) and Iowa State (606) rounded out the Top 10 team leaders.

Irwin was the Cougars' steadiest player on Monday, firing a 70 in the opening round and posted a 71 in the second round.

Junior Ricky Romano stood in a tie for 17th place at 146, while senior Kevin Newman was tied for 23rd at 147. Senior Zach Mowbray was in a tie for 29th place at 148, while junior Pablo Acuna was tied for 38th at 151.
