Providence, R.I. - The Holy Cross track and field teams took to the road this weekend, competing at the Brown Spring Invitational in Providence, Rhode Island on Sunday. Sophomore runner Lauren Courtney (Ashland, Mass.) established a new school record in the 400-meter dash, crossing the line in 57.95 seconds. The finish marks the first time that Courtney has ever broken the 58 second barrier in her career. Courtney broke her own school record of 58.31 seconds, which she set at the St. Valentine Invitational on February 10, 2007. Courtney took second place on Sunday. Junior Nathaniel Couture (Taunton, Mass.) was the only male Crusader event winner on the day, taking first place in the javelin. Couture threw 58.26m (191 feet 1 inch), beating his closest competition by over four feet.

In the women's meet: Sophomore Danielle Meder (Chicopee, Mass.) won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.78 seconds. Freshman Claire Luke (Delmar, N.Y.) placed third in the 3000m steeplechase, covering the course in 11:55.11. Freshman Maureen Meagher (Allentown, Pa.) placed ninth in the 800m run, crossing the line in 2:18.49. Freshman Meghan Dunne (Mendham, N.J.) placed ninth in the 5000m run with a time of 19:52.93. In the field events, junior Amanda Dupuis (East Sandwich, Mass.) placed seventh in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.55m (5 feet 1 inch).

Sophomore Katherine Clifford (Norwood, Mass.) placed sixth in the discus with a throw of 39.18m (128-06). Clifford also took sixth in the hammer throw with a toss of 43.70m (143-04). Sophomore Sarah Murphy (Auburn, Mass.) placed eighth in that event with a throw of 41.81m (137-02). Sophomore Jenna Hinchey (Orange, Conn.) took fourth place in the javelin with a throw of 36.42m (119-06).

In the men's meet: sophomore Sebastian Fidelus (Jersey City, N.J.) took tenth in the 800m run with a time of 1:59.57. Sophomore Matthew Talbot (West Hempstead, N.Y.) placed seventh in the 5000m run with a time of 16:50.03. In the 3000m steeplechase, sophomore Robert Farrelly (East Northport, N.Y.) crossed the line in 10:33.37, placing fourth.

In the field events, junior Conor Meikle (Newport, RI) placed seventh in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.95m (12-11.50). Sophomore Jonathan Medeiros (New Bedford, Mass.) threw a distance of 44.67m (146-07) to take fourth in the discus. Senior Nicholas Carr (Concord, Mass.) threw 49.27m (161-08), placing fifth in the weight throw. Sophomore Stephen Mandravelis (Nashua, N.H.) placed eighth in that event with a throw of 45.79m (150-03).

Both of the Holy Cross track and field teams will compete at the Patriot League Championship being held at Bucknell in Bethlehem, Pa. on Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5. Events begin at 9:00 am each day of the competition.
