Women's Ice Hockey Downs Salve Regina, 4-1

Newport, R.I. - The Holy Cross women's ice hockey team got four goals from four different scorers in a 4-1 win over Salve Regina, Saturday night in Newport, R.I. The Crusaders improve to 13-4-1 overall and to 10-4-0 in the ECAC East. The Seahawks fall to 6-13-1 on the season and to 3-14-0 in the conference. Holy Cross found themselves at an early 1-0 deficit as Salve Regina's Krissy Roche netted a goal at 14:07 into the first period. The Crusaders would answer back with a goal from freshman Erica van DeGraff (Guelph, Ont. Canada) 1:19 later, tying the game at 1-1 heading into the locker room for the first break.

The Crusaders would take the ice with a mission, scoring just 1:47 into the second stanza. Freshman Kathryn Kelley (Dedham, Mass.) put the puck past Salve Regina goalie Tamsin Gosselin to give Holy Cross the lead that they would never give up. Junior Casey Harvell (Lexington, Mass.) assisted Kelley's goal.

Sophomore Stephanie Couzin (Chicago, Ill.) scored a power play goal in the middle of the second period to pad the Crusader lead. Junior Sam Rush (Wakefield, Mass.) and van DeGraff were credited with the assists. Harvell would score the game's last goal with 1:21 remaining in the second period, brining the game to its 4-1 final score. Freshman Julia Matthews (Canton, Mass) got the assist on Harvell's goal.

Sophomore Jennifer Van Dongen (Calgary, Alb. Canada) stopped 15 shots on her way to the victory. Van Dongen's record is now 4-2-0 for the season. Salve Regina's Gosselin halted 35 shots in the loss.

The Crusader women's ice hockey team travels to Purchase, N.Y. to take on #6 Manhattanville on Sunday, February 4. Face off is set for 2:00 pm.
