Crusader Cross Country Competes at Connecticut College Invitational

Waterford, Conn. - The Holy Cross women's cross country team took fifth place in the Connecticut College Cross Country Invitational in Waterford, Conn. on Saturday. Sophomore Elizabeth Alizzi (Syosset, N.Y) was the first Crusader across the line, finishing 11th overall. One the men's team, freshman Timothy Richard paced the Crusaders finishing in 41st place overall. The men's team placed ninth.

Alizzi's time of 19:11 in the 5K paced the Crusaders, leading them to the overall fifth place finish. Sophomore Colleen Spilka (Hamden, Conn.) improved on her 2005 Conn. College Invitational by 30 seconds, finishing in 19:25. Two other Crusaders broke the 20 minute mark, freshman Claire Luke (Delmar, N.Y.) with a time of 19:41 and senior Megan Hyland (Rye, N.Y.) crossing the line in 19:49. Freshman Sarah Croteau (Westminster, Mass.), junior Kathleen O'Gorman (West Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Alexandra Swiatocha (Mahopac, N.Y.) also took home points for Holy Cross.

On the 8K course, Richard (26:44) and fellow freshman Garrett Huddy (Pataskala, Ohio) led the men's team to their ninth place finish. Huddy crossed the line second for the Crusaders with a time of 26:55, finishing 50th overall. Senior Stephen Kress (Portland, Maine) finished in 27:12, placing 58th. Rounding out the scoring for Holy Cross: freshman Kyle Rougeot (Torrington, Conn), sophomore Brad Mish (Hadley, Mass.), senior John Ortolani (Williamsville, N.Y.), and sophomore Sebastian Fidelus (Jersey City, N.J.).

The Crusader women finished with 152 points for the fifth place finish in a field of 27 teams. Holy Cross' men's team finished the day with 289 points, putting them in ninth place of 30 teams.

Both teams are back in action again at the Fitchburg Invitational, in Fitchburg, Mass. The race begins at 4:30 pm on Friday, September 15.
