Hoyas Top BIG EAST Foes Providence and Boston College in Volleyball
The Georgetown University women's volleyball won two BIG EAST matches this past weekend on the road. The Hoyas handed the Providence College Friars a 3-1 loss on Saturday, October 21, then moved on to defeat Boston College 3-0 on Sunday, October 22. Georgetown improves to 14-8 on the season and 4-2 in BIG EAST play, despite BIG EAST First Team selection and GU team captain Kiran Gill (Naperville, Ill./Naperville) missing the last six matches.
The Hoyas started their road swing in Providence, R.I., where they won a 3-1 (15-12, 13-15, 15-5, 15-6) decision over Providence College. Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Warner (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei), middle blocker Anna Kleinsorge (So., Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis) and senior middle blocker Meg Troller (Sr., Elmhurst, Ill./York) led GU on attack in the match. Warner tallied a team-high 14 kills as well as seven digs, two blocks and an ace, while Kleinsorge posted a match-high six blocks in addition to 12 kills, two digs and hitting percentage of .526 (12 kills with only two errors in 19 attempts). Troller continues to have her best season ever, ending the match with 12 kills, five blocks and a hitting percentage of .579 (12 kills with only one error in 19 attempts). Sarah Katinger led the Friars with a match-high 21 kills and 15 digs. Freshman setter Jennifer Ward (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) is a consistent force for the Hoyas at the setter's position. Ward ended up with a match-high 49 assists and four aces to go with two kills, three digs and a block. Junior outside hitter Yulia Vtyurina (Moscow, Russia/Moscow #1415) contributed nine kills, seven digs, three blocks and a service aces, while freshman Laura Hart (Sacramento, Calif./Rio Americano) totaled 10 digs, three aces and two blocks in the four-game match. Senior middle blocker Kaili Stevens (Lenexa, Kan./Shawnee Mission), easing back into the line-up after being sidelined with an injury, ended the contest with seven digs, three kills, two blocks, an assist and an ace after seeing action in two games. Freshman outside hitter Molly Healy (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) added eight digs, three aces and an assist, and junior outside hitter Meg Mullen (Westlake Village, Calif./Westlake) chipped in two kills, four digs, an assist and an ace. The Hoyas hit a solid .302 (58 kills, 20 errors, 126 attempts) for the match, while they Providence to .103 (49 kills with 34 errors in 146 attempts). Georgetown also held a 10-3 advantage in team blocks. Georgetown continued its winning ways on Sunday in Chestnut Hill, Mass., with a 3-0 (15-8, 15-5, 15-13) win over Boston College. Kleinsorge and Warner led the way on attack, with Kleinsorge having one of the best matches of her career. Kleinsorge turned in a match and career-high 21 kills in addition to a match-high four blocks and a phenomenal hitting percentage of .655 (21 kills with only two errors in 29 attempts). Warner garnered 14 kills, six digs, two blocks, an assist and an ace on the day. Ward had a match-high 38 assists, along with four blocks and a kill, and Hart tied a match-high with 11 digs. Troller and Vtyurina posted four kills apiece, with Troller adding two blocks and a dig and Vtyurina five digs and three blocks. Stevens came away with three kills, four digs, an assist and an ace over two games. Rachel Bach and Lauren Schwer led the Eagles with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Bach's stats also included two blocks, two digs and two assists, while Schwer's reflected a team-high 11 digs and a block. GU hit .258 for the match while holding BC to .071.
