Georgetown Hands George Washington a 3-1 Loss in Volleyball Action

WASHINGTON D.C. (October 11, 2000) -- The Georgetown University women's volleyball team won a 3-1 (15-13, 9-15, 15-13, 15-9) decision against cross-town rival George Washington on Wednesday, October 11, at the Smith Center on the GW campus. The victory was significant in that George Washington starts five seniors and had lost only three matches prior to GU's visit. In addition, the Hoyas played without senior starters Kiran Gill (Naperville, Ill./Naperville) and Kaili Stevens (Lenexa, Kan./Shawnee Mission). The win improves GU's record to 12-7 overall, while the Colonials drop to 14-4. Georgetown is 2-2 in BIG EAST Conference play.

Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Warner (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) had an outstanding match for the Hoyas. Warner posted a match and career-high 20 kills and 25 digs. She was also deadly accurate on attack, hitting .436 (20 kills with only three errors in 39 attempts) over the four games. Renee Arnold and Suzana Manole led the Colonials. Arnold had 16 kills, seven digs and three blocks, while Manole scored 15 kills and 15 digs.

Junior outside hitter Yulia Vtyurina (Moscow, Russia/Moscow #1415) posted a match-high five blocks to go with 19 kills, nine digs and two block. Freshman setter Jennifer Ward (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) registered a match-high 64 assists in addition to seven digs, two kills and an ace. Middle blockers Anna Kleinsorge (So., Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis) and Meg Troller (Sr., Elmhurst, Ill./York) both tallied 12 kills on the night, with Kleinsorge adding four blocks and Troller two. Freshman Laura Hart (Sacramento, Calif./Rio Americano), in her third collegiate start, notched 10 kills, nine digs, three assists and two aces. Junior outside hitter Meg Mullen (Westlake Village, Calif./Westlake) and Anna Sones (So., Pasadena, Calif./Polytechnic School) chipped in eight and seven digs, respectively.

George Washington hit .273 for the match, and Georgetown .257. The Hoyas tallied 7.5 team blocks to the Colonials' five.
