Women's Tennis Rolls to Fifth Straight Win; Downs UMBC, 6-3

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Georgetown swept all three doubles matches to break a 3-3 tie and went on to defeat the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, 6-3, in women's tennis action on Friday, April 7, at the McDonough Tennis Courts. It was the fifth-consecutive win for the Hoyas and moves their overall record to 9-9. The winning streak has been dominated by the play at doubles as GU has won 15 straight doubles points in its last five matches.

Georgetown took an early 3-0 lead and appeared to be well in control of the match. Senior Lucky Ravindra (Sr., Lake City, Fla./Texas Tech) wasted little time in defeating her opponent, Nicole Russo, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Lauren Mendes (Sr., Summit, N.J./Oak Knoll) followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Karina Molsing at No. 5 singles, and Sarada Ravindra (Sr., Lake City, Fla./Texas Tech) handed Kathryn Wheatley a 6-2, 7-6(2) loss at No. 2.

But UMBC rallied to tie the contest at 3-3 by winning matches at No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 singles. Sophomore Caroline Marshall (Pittsford, N.Y./Harley) fell to Karri Bielewicz, 7-6(2), 6-3 at No. 3 and Carrie Koneilja downed Sarah White (Fr., Westwood, Mass./Milton) 6-0, 7-6(3) at No. 6. Missy Mendes (Sr., Summit, N.J./Oak Knoll) owned three match points in her second set, but couldn't put away Anita Pushpanathan who battled back to win the third set and the match, 6-0, 5-7, 7-6(6).

With the best of nine match tied at 3-3, one team would have to capture two of the final three contests to win. Georgetown took command of the doubles competition as the No. 3 tandem of Kim Wattrick (Fr., Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./University Liggett) and Hadley Muckerman (Fr., St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) posted an 8-2 victory over Molsing and Koneilja. The duo of S. Ravindra and M. Mendes clinched the win for GU with another 8-2 win. In the final match of the day, the No. 1 Hoya duo of L. Ravindra and Marshall came from behind for the second straight time to win their match in a tie-break. The pair combined to defeat Russo and Bielewicz, 9-8(3), after being down 4-1 to keep the consecutive doubles wins streak alive at 15. Against Mary Washington on Wednesday, Ravindra and Marshall came back from a 6-1 deficit to win the match 9-8 (5).

The women's tennis team will try to make it six straight wins this Sunday when they face cross-town rival George Washington at 12:00 noon on the McDonough Tennis Courts.
