Stanwick, Ellers, Lozano and Biles Earn IWLCA/US Lacrosse National All-America

BALTIMORE, MD – The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA)/US Lacosse have announced the National All-Americans for the 2003 season and four Georgetown University players are among the honorees. Senior Wick Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) and junior Michi Ellers (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) earned All-America First Team honors, while junior Gloria Lozano (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley) garnered Second Team accolades and senior Melissa Biles (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes) was selected to the Third Team.  It marks the second-consecutive national All-America award for Stanwick, Lozano and Biles and the first for Ellers.

Stanwick, an attacker, led Georgetown in scoring in 2003 with 64 points off the strength of 48 goals and 16 assists.  She also scooped up 37 ground balls and made six caused turnovers.  A tri-captain of the 2003 Hoyas, Stanwick scored the most goals in a single game among NCAA Division I players this season with a nine-goal performance in the Hoyas’ victory over BIG EAST foe Notre Dame on April 19.  In addition, she scored three or more goals in eight contests this year. Stanwick is ranked 17th in goals per game on the NCAA Division I Statistical Leaders’ List with a 2.82 per game average.  She is also 19th in points per game with a 3.76 per game average. Stanwick, a nominee for the prestigious Tewaaraton Trophy, was named BIG EAST Attacker of the Year and was a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team.  She also picked up BIG EAST Player of the Week honors three times during the season.  Stanwick was selected to the All-America Third Team in 2002. 

Ellers a 2003 tri-captain, became one of the top defenders in the nation in 2003 after moving from the midfield.  She is ranked first in the country among Division I players in caused turnovers per game with a 3.29 per game average.  Ellers led the Hoyas in caused turnovers with a total of 56, while her 55 ground balls was second best on the team.  She also tallied 11 points (9G, 2A) and 24 draw controls.  Ellers posted five or more caused turnovers in six games this season.  She was named 2003 BIG EAST Defender of the Year by a vote of the league’s head coaches and was a candidate for this year’s Tewaaraton Trophy.

Lozano is a midfielder who contributed on both sides of the field for the Hoyas in 2003.  Lozano is ranked first in the nation in draw controls with a 4.76 per game average.  Her 81 draw controls, a team best this season, broke the Georgetown record for most draws in a single season, eclipsing Sarah Oglesby’s 75 set during in 2000.  Lozano was Georgetown’s third leading scorer in 2003 with 27 goals and seven assists for 34 points, while her 52 ground balls was third best on the squad.  She also tallied 23 caused turnovers. Lozano, a candidate for the 2003 Tewaaraton Trophy, was named 2003 BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year and was a unanimous selection for the All-BIG EAST First Team.  She was also a 2003 Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America First Team and Preseason All-BIG EAST selection.  Lozano earned National All-America Third Team honors in 2002. 

Biles has been the Hoyas’ top mark-up defender the past two seasons.  A four-year starter and a tri-captain for the 2002 and 2003 teams, Biles grabbed 36 ground balls, posted 23 caused turnovers and won three draw controls.  She was voted 2003 BIG EAST Preseason Defender of the Year and was a unanimous choice for the All-BIG EAST Preseason First Team.  Biles was tapped for the National All-America First Team in 2002.

Georgetown, ranked as high as third in the ILWCA Top 20 Poll this year, compiled an overall record of 13-4 under the direction of Head Coach Kim Simons.  The Hoyas won their third-consecutive BIG EAST Conference title with a perfect 6-0 record and made their sixth-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.  GU defeated James Madison in the First Round of the tournament, then fell to Virginia in the Quarterfinals.
