April 11, 2007 Charlottesville, Va. - No.5 Virginia controlled the tempo early on and posted a 14-7 victory over the visiting and ninth-ranked Georgetown University women's lacrosse team on a rainy and cold evening at Klockner Stadium on Wednesday night. The Hoyas fall to 7-5 on the season while the Cavaliers improve to 11-2. The Cavaliers scored on four of their first eight shots, all four of them from just outside the crease area. Virginia finished the opening half scoring nine times on 17 shots as the Hoyas faced their biggest halftime deficit of the season, 9-3. Blair Weymouth netted three goals in the first half while Kate Breslin collected two goals and two assists for Virginia . Virginia controlled the tempo winning 10 of the first half's 13 draw controls with Brittany Kalkstein winning six DCs. Georgetown senior Coco Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) scored three goals to go along with an assist to lead the Hoya offense, marking the 26th time in her career Stanwick tallied at least three goals. Senior Schuyler (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) collected a goal and an assist while senior goalkeeper Maggie Koch (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside) made 13 saves, one shy of her career high. Sutton extended her consecutive game streak with a point to 18 games dating back to least season. Brittany Kalkstein scored unassisted at 28:34 after the Cavaliers won the game's first draw control. Kate Breslin put Virginia ahead 2-0 at 25:41 after slipping a rebound of her own shot past Koch. Senior Brittany Baschuk (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge) scored the first Hoya goal with an assist going to Stanwick at 22:56 after GU defender Megan Ellis (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) forced a Virginia turnover on the defensive end. Breslin handed out assists on the game's next two goals with Jess Wasilewski and Blair Weymouth both scoring over a three-minute span for a 4-1 Cavalier lead.
GU sophomore Jordan Trautman (Mystic, Conn./Loomis Chafee) dodged a defender for unassisted goal at 13:17 as the Hoyas closed to 4-2. Weymouth notched a hat trick in the first half with her second goal coming at 12:27 for a 5-2 Cavalier bulge. Ashley McCullough scored after taking a pass from Breslin at 8:15 to put Virginia up 6-2 and the Hoyas immediately called a timeout. Stanwick scored a free position goal at 5:59 as GU climbed to within 6-3 but that would be as close as Georgetown would get in the opening period. Virginia scored the first half's final three goals, two of them coming in the last 31 seconds of the half. In the second half, Sutton was behind the cage and found a cutting Stanwick as the senior classmates hooked up for a goal the pull the Hoyas to within 9-4 with 26:07 to go. Virginia scored the next three goals before Stanwick scored her third goal of the game at 14:53 to make the score 12-5 in favor of the home team. Sophomore Megan Bloomer (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) got in the scoring column at 9:10 to pull Georgetown within 12-6. Bloomer has now scored a goal in consecutive games for the first time this season. Virginia's Breslin made it 13-6 in favor of the Cavaliers with 6:27 remaining scoring her fourth goal of the game. Sutton picked up her first goal of the game at 4:25 make the score, 14-7. Georgetown came into the game winning the last two games over the Cavaliers. The Hoyas return to the field again on Saturday, April 14 when the Hoyas travel to South Bend, Ind. for a BIG EAST meeting with the No. 11 Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The first draw is set for 1 p.m. |
