No. 3/10 Georgetown Women's Lax Picks Up First Win of 2007, 11-8 Over Oregon

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse team bounced back from the season-opening loss to James Madison last Saturday to defeat Oregon, 11-8 this afternoon at Multi-Sport Field. The Hoyas even their record at 1-1, while the Ducks fall to 3-2. Senior Coco Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep), followed up a five-goal game on Saturday with a seven-point (six goals, one assist) effort Friday. Senior Schuyler Sutton (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) added her first two goals of the season, while classmate Brittany Baschuk (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge) had her second multiple-point game with a goal and an assist. The Ducks quickly jumped ahead to a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes on this afternoon's contest. Jen May tallied an unassisted goal at 4:08 and Oregon immediately followed 18 seconds later with another goal. After winning the draw control, Kate Fleming fed a streaking Alison Leiner who buried the game's second goal. Georgetown got on the scoreboard at 8:35 on a nice sequence of passes. Sophomore Bunny O'Reilly (Blue Bell, Pa./Springside) gathered the ball around midfield and took it deep into Oregon territory, where she fed Stanwick. Stanwick gave a quick pass to Buschuk who beat the Ducks' keeper from a couple feet out. Oregon opened the lead back up to two goals on a free position shot from Kate Fleming at 12:16. However, Georgetown responded with five-straight goals to take its first lead of the game. Stanwick began the scoring run with a free position goal about 18 minutes and just under five minutes later posted her second goal of the day. Stanwick, set up on the right side of the net, took a feed from Baschuk across the crease and beat the keeper for her seventh of the season.
Sutton gave the Hoyas their first lead, 4-3, at 22:48, unleashing a hard shot from just outside the eight-meter arc. Stanwick scored two more goals late in the first half opening up a 6-3 Hoya lead. Her third goal of the game came at 25:59 on a nice move in front of the net and added her fourth 45 seconds later, capitalizing on a bad clear by the Ducks. Sophomore Jordan Trautman (Mystic, Conn./Loomis Chaffee School) grabbed the ground ball and fed a wide-open Stanwick for an one-on-one opportunity. The Ducks' Ilsa can den Berg broke the string of five unanswered goals by the Hoyas with just 15.5 seconds remaining in the half, shortening Georgetown's halftime lead to 6-4. Sutton began the second half scoring with her second tally of the game, again firing a shot from just outside the eight-meter arc, finding the upper right corner at 31:38. Oregon quickly matched with an unassisted goal from Jen May at 33:10, making the score 7-5 in favor of Georgetown. However, the Hoyas put the game away, holding the Ducks scoreless over the next 23:16, while adding four goals of their own for an 11-5 advantage. O'Reilly began the run with a score after a rebound on her own shot in front of the net at 36:06. "It was a matter of executing better in the second half," said head coach Ricky Fried. "I think we were a bit were reactive early. Our shot selection was good it was matter of finishing the shots. Stanwick added two more goals, beginning with an unassisted tally at 38:53, as she make a nice spin move and beat the Oregon keeper at her feet. Both teams remained scoreless for the next 11 minutes, before Stanwick posted her sixth goal of the day at 50:46 on a free position shot. Junior Zan Morley (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside) ended the scoring streak by posting her first goal of the season on a nice feed from behind the net by freshman Molly Ford (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep). Oregon finally ended its drought with 3:34 remaining in regulation and would go on to score three-consecutive goals within the span of 1:02 for an 11-8 final. Brooke Dieringer had the three final goals for the Ducks. The Hoyas held a 39-13 advantage on shots and had a 17-12 edge on ground balls, led by four from senior Chloe Asselin (Talloires, France/Edgemont). Georgetown also controlled two-thirds of the draw controls and forced 24 Duck turnovers. Senior Maggie Koch (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside) had two saves in the win, while Anna Poponyak stopped 14 Hoya shots. The Hoyas go on the road for the first time in the 2007 season on Wednesday, March 7, traveling to Fairfax, Va. for a 7 p.m. match up with George Mason. |
