Georgetown Crew Opens Fall Season at Head of the Potomac

Sept. 26, 2005

Washington, DC - The Georgetown men's and women's varsity crew teams wetted their oars in competition for the first time this season in the 25th Head of the Potomac regatta held this weekend in Washington DC.

For the men's squad, the Hoyas placed two heavyweight and three lightweight crews into the water in the men's open eight race. The "B" lightweight eight crossed the finish line first with a time of 14:56.4 nearly ten seconds ahead of Georgetown BC. The other four crews would finish in the fourth to seventh positions only 23 seconds apart in the nine team race.

In the men's four-with, Georgetown took the first three places with the "A" heavyweight group crossing in 17:17.3, 18 seconds ahead of the "A" lightweight squad and 37 seconds better than the third place lightweight team.

On the women's side, racing two heavyweight and two lightweight crews in the Open Eight division, the Hoyas filled four of the top seven spots, highlighted by a third place finish. Later in the day, half of the heavyweight squad doubled-up into the Women's 4 event to finish second and third in the field of eleven.

The first of the Hoyas' heavyweight crews rowed much of the course alone after passing Capital RC early in the race. Unable to catch the winning Naval Academy crew who started ahead of them, the Hoya crew finished third edged out by Thompson BC by 0.6 second over the 2.8 mile course. The second of the Hoya heavyweight crews finished seventh unable to hold off their lightweight teammates who passed them around the half-way mark. Racing in fairly even line-ups the two lightweight crews finished slightly less than ten seconds apart placing fifth and sixth.

In the Women's Four, two Georgetown entries started in the middle of the pack and were able to pass several crews in finishing second and third to Capital RC who won in a time of 20:15.7. The Hoyas finished in 20:23.9 and 20:40.3 completing their racing day.
