GU Takes Down Sacred Heart In Women's Hoops, 70-52
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (Dec. 4) - For twenty minutes on Monday night, the crowd of 603 in the William H. Pitt Center saw one of the best games of basketball they were likely to see all year. Unfortunately for Sacred Heart, the game didn't end there. After leading 27-25 at the half, the Pioneers were outgunned by the visiting Hoyas, as Georgetown led the second-half scoring 45-25 to win the game. In the first half, both teams struggled to produce offensively. Georgetown made just 9-of-25 field goals for the half, while Sacred Heart was 11-of-30. In the second, All-America prospect Katie Smrcka-Duffy (Sterling, VA / James Madison) took over, scoring 15 points and making three steals. She ended the evening with 20 points, nine rebounds, and five steals. Hoya teammate Lesley Walker (Silver Spring, MD / Wheaton) finished with 13 points and five rebounds, while three other Georgetown players ended with eight points. The Pioneers were led by sophomore forward Brooke Rutnik, who had 15 points and eight rebounds on the night. Center Tara Brady gathered 12 points and six rebounds, and senior forward Heather Coonradt ended with 10 points. The teams were a combined 22-of-37 on free throw shooting for the evening. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 6-2 on the season. The Pioneers fall to 2-4. Georgetown will play local rival George Washington at home on Wednesday, December 6 at 8 p.m. |
