Hoyas Falter in Second Half and Lose to #22 Notre Dame in Women’s Basketball

WASHINGTON – Georgetown’s women’s basketball team held a one-point lead at the half against #22 Notre Dame but the Hoyas were outscored 49-28 in the second half and lost to the Fighting Irish 86-66. The Hoyas overall record stands at 12-14 and 4-11 in BIG EAST play. Notre Dame is 19-7 overall and 13-2 in the Conference.

Leading the Hoyas scoring effort was Nok Duany (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington North), who had 21 points, 15 from the free throw line. Also in double digits for GU were Rebekkah Brunson (Oxon Hill, Md./Oxon Hill) and Mary Lisicky (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) with 13 and 11 respectively. Notre Dame had four players in double figures, headed by Alicia Ratay’s 24, Katy Flecky and Allison Bustamante had 14 apiece and Ericka Haney netted 13.

Georgetown used a five of eight performance from beyond the arc to stymie the Irish in the first half. Lisicky nailed three of the five and both Lesley Walker (Silver Spring, Md./Wheaton) and Shawntese Charles (Washington, D.C./St. John’s H.S.) had one each. GU led by as many as seven during the period but a 7-2 run by Notre Dame in the session’s final 1:47 allowed the Irish to close the gap to one at the break.

Notre Dame took the lead 20 seconds into the second half off a jumper by Amanda Barksdale. making the score ND 39, GU 38. GU retook the lead at 40-39 when Walker nailed an outside shot. That would be the last time the Blue and Gray would be ahead in the game. Notre Dame opened up an eight-point margin over the next five minutes before Georgetown scored seven unanswered and closed to within one with 13:50 to play. Notre Dame came out of the timeout and went on a 13-4 run, opening a double-digit margin at the 7:02 mark. The Hoyas never broke the double-digit barrier the remainder of the game.

GU’s Walker played her last home game in McDonough Gym in front of 1,017 fans and finished the night with seven points, two rebounds, three assists and four steals. For the game GU was outrebounded 46-31 and shot only 31.7% compared to ND’s 53.8%.

The final regular season game for the Hoyas will be at Seton Hall on Tuesday, February 26 at 7 p.m.
