Lisicky Surpasses 1,000 Career Points Plateau in Women’s Hoops Loss to Rutgers
2/21/2004 WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Junior guard Mary Lisicky (Whitehall, Pa./ Whitehall) became the 19th player in Hoya history to score 1,000 points en route to a career high 29 against the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers. Lisicky’s efforts were not enough as the Hoyas (11-13, 5-8) fell to the Scarlet Knights (17-9, 7-4), 66-71. Georgetown’s All- America candidate Rebekkah Brunson (Sr., Oxon Hill, Md./ Oxon Hill) was held scoreless in the first half, but scored 13 in second stanza and notched her 46th career double-double with 14 rebounds. Both Brunson and Lisicky have scored over 1,000 points in their careers marking the first time GU has had two 1,000-point scorers on the court since the 1992-93 duo of Kris Witfill and Leni Wilson. Rutgers defense held the Hoyas to 25.0% shooting in the first half and forced seven turnovers. Georgetown’s defense meanwhile held Rutgers’ star Cappie Pondexter to one point in the first stanza and racked up 21 boards compared to RU’s 20. RU entered halftime up 29-24. The Hoyas started the second half with an 8-0 run that included Brunson’s first six points of the game. The Hoyas held the lead until midway through the period when Rutgers went on a 12-1 run and held the lead through the final buzzer. The Hoyas made one last effort in the final minute with consecutive three-pointers by Kate Carlin (Fr., Ambler, Pa./ Mount St. Joseph's) and Lisicky, to close the gap to two, but the Scarlet Knights hit enough free throws to cause time to run out. From the foul line Georgetown shot 60.5%, connecting on 23-of-28. Aside from Lisicky, who was 11 of 13 from the charity stripe, the rest of the team made 12 of 26. Georgetown stayed in the game by winning the rebounding battle 47-33, including Brunson’s game high 14. The Scarlet Knights shot 42.5% from the field, including a deadly 67% (six of nine) from three-point territory. Rutgers also made 31 of 44 free throws in a contest that featured five foul-outs. Pondexter led RU with 22 points while Nikki Jett added 13. The Hoyas return to McDonough Arena on Wednesday, February 25th to host Syracuse in their final home game of the season. Tip-off is at 8 p.m. and can be heard live on WGTB radio at www.wgtb923.com
