Hoyas Men's Tennis Dropped by St. John's in BIG EAST Play

The Georgetown Hoyas took a solid beating from St. John's University March 18, falling to the Red Storm by a 7-0 margin. The team's 1999-2000 dual match record now stands at 3-11. They are 0-2 in the BIG EAST.

The match opened with the doubles competition and the Hoyas were unable to win the team point. They did however receive a win at No. 2 doubles from Nick Sklavounos (So., Waterford, Conn./Waterford) and Andre Benjamin (So., New York, N.Y./Fieldston). Sklavounos and Benjamin started well, hit a lull in the middle of their pro-set, then finished strongly for a 9-7 victory over Cameron Lore and Christian Carrere. The No. 1 doubles team of Marc Lohser (Fr., Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) and Troy Crichlow (Fr., Wilton, Mass./Milton) fell 8-5 to Eric Sharf and Jaideep Shetty, while the #3 team of Dave Boyer (Sr., Winston-Salem, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) and Ken Jordan (So., Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) fell 8-4 to Andre Vanier and Jake Maxwell.

Down 1-0 after the doubles, GU fell behind in their first four singles matches early. Sklavounos played well in a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Scharf. Crichlow struggled against Vanier in the No. 3 singles match, losing 6-3, 6-4. Senior captain Beau Brewer (Sr., Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Central) was not on form and lost 6-0, 6-0 to Lore at No. 4. Lohser did a good job returning Shetty's big serve at No. 2 singles to forge a second set tiebreak lead of 5-1. However, Shetty bounced back from the deficit and prevailed 6-4, 7-6(5). With the match already determined, the remaining singles contests with Benjamin and Jordan were sent out. Jordan had solid moments in his first set, but fell 6-3, 6-1 to Brain Scharf. Benjamin won his first set in a tiebreak, but lost his remaining two sets 6-2, 6-4 against Jake Maxwell. The final score was Georgetown-0, St. John's-7.

This week the Hoyas have matches at the McDonough Tennis Courts on Thursday versus George Mason at 2:30 p.m., on Saturday versus Hampton at 11:00 a.m., and on Sunday against Duquesne at 10:00 a.m.
