March 26, 2007

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown men's tennis team split a pair of matches over the weekend, dropping a 6-1 road decision at Old Dominion on Friday before defeating Rutgers, 6-1, in the BIG EAST Conference opener. The men improve to an overall record of 8-6 with a 1-0 mark in BIG EAST play.

Against Rutgers, the Hoyas got off to a strong start as the freshman tandem of Anthony Tan (Jakarta, Indonesia/Anglo-Chinese JC) and Will Lowell (Nahant, Mass./Saddlebrook Prep) clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 win at the second position.

Junior Ted Tywang (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) won his third-consecutive singles match and for the third match in a row allowed his opponent just one game in the match. A win at the fourth slot from junior Jeffrey Schnell (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) gave the Hoyas a 3-0 edge and junior co-captain Etienne Paris (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) clinched the match with a straight-set win at the third position.

The Blue and Gray went on to win two of the last three singles matches en route to the 6-1 victory.

Against Old Dominion, the Blue and Gray lost all three doubles matches to lose the doubles point. Tywang was the lone victor in singles action, taking a 6-3, 6-0 decision over ODU's Yakov Diskin at sixth singles.
