Georgetown Swimming and Diving Breaks Four School Records at the Patriot Invitational
November 25, 2002 FAIRFAX, Va. – Georgetown men and women’s swimming and diving broke four school records and qualified multiple athletes for season end championships while finishing seventh overall this weekend in the Patriot Invitational at the Jim McKay Natorium. Georgetown’s 400 Men’s Freestyle Relay team and diver Juliana Bonilla (West Covina, Calif./West Covina) placed in the top-8 in the Patriot Invitational to lead Georgetown. Michael Bayer (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan), Shondai Enters (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary’s International), Jim McLaughlin (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) and Bryan Evangelista (Northport, N.Y./St. Anthony’s), propelled the Hoyas to a time of 3:13.25 in the 400 Men’s Freestyle Relay, good for eighth place out of 17 teams. Bonilla competed in the one and three meter diving events, placing fourth in the three meter and eighth in the one meter event. Jon Hayden (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park) set a new Georgetown record in the 1650 Freestyle with a time of 16:22.85 while Bonilla set a new three-meter diving mark, accumulating 380.70 points. Bonilla now owns all four school records for diving. Freshman Katie Amaro (Shreveport, La.) set two other Georgetown records, posting a time of 1:56.78 in the 200 Freestyle and 5:08.20 in the 500 Freestyle. Sophomore Michelle Herd (Canton Center, Conn./Westminster) earned a spot in the BIG EAST Qualifier with strong showings in the 100 and 200 Backstroke. 15 Georgetown athletes also earned bids to the ECAC Qualifiers with their performances in the Patriot Invitational. Herd, Amaro, Hayden, Evangelista, Enters, Bayer, McLaughlin and Bonilla earned places in the ECAC Qualifiers along with teammates Annie Moore (Blacksburg, Va./The Bolles School), Colleen Newman (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame), Edmund Caulfield (Caldwell, N.J./St. Peter’s Prep), Brendan Griffin (Andover, Mass./St. John’s Prep), Kevin Walsh (Bethesda, Md./Saint Anslems), Kevin Rieffel (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College High) and Steve Ferguson (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) as well as the 200 Freestyle Relay team of Liz D’Auria Newton, Mass./Newton South), Francesca DiSilvio (Hingham Mass, Hingham High), Erin Lenahan (Western Springs, Ill./St. Ignatius) and Amaro. The Hoyas host Howard and St. Francis of New York on Saturday, December 7 at 1 p.m. in McCarthy Pool at Georgetown. |
