FAIRFAX, Va. – The Georgetown men's and women's swimming and diving teams shattered five school records last weekend at the Patriot Invitational at the Aquatic & Fitness Center on the campus of George Mason University. With four record-setting efforts on the women’s side, the Georgetown women captured eighth place against a highly competitive 11-team field. The men’s team ended the competition in ninth place.

Sophomore Katie Amaro (Shreveport, La./Loyola Prep) led the Hoyas with a pair of fifth-place finishes—both of which established new school records. Amaro’s time of 1:55.15 in the 200 yd freestyle broke her old mark of 1:56.78, and her time of 5:03.88 in the 500 yd freestyle bested her old mark of 5:08.20.

Freshman Laura Sytnyk (Nutley, N.J./Mount St. Dominic) swam 2:11.08 in the 200 yd butterfly preliminaries to break the previous school record of 2:11.75, held by Katie Hayes. Sytnyk went on to swim 2:11.63 in the consolation section of the event to place 11th overall.

Senior Juliana Bonilla (West Covina, Calif./Covina High) also captured a school record, with a mark of 398.55 over 11 dives in the 3 mtr diving. The old record, set in 2002, was 380.70.

Junior Kevin Walsh (Bethesda, Md./Saint Anselms) also had a strong day on the men’s side, with a record-breaking time of 1:56.53 in the 200 yd butterfly. Walsh’s effort earned him 11th place overall in the event, and his mark topped the old Georgetown school record of 1:56.83, held by Bryan Evangelista.

Both Hoya swimming and diving teams are scheduled to travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico, from January 2-9 for Christmas Training. Their next competition will be held on Jan. 17, at home, against Radford, Howard and VMI.
