Georgetown's Brendan Cannon Named ECAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week
May 9, 2006 Washington, D.C. - Georgetown University sophomore Brendan Cannon (Haverford, Pa./The Haverford School) was named the ECAC Lacrosse League's Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon. Cannon scored one goal and assisted on three more in leading the Hoyas to a 10-9 come-from-behind win over Penn State to clinch the 2006 ECAC Championship. It was the team's second ECAC title in the last three years (2004) and the program's sixth since the league was formed in 2000.
The Hoyas, who were seeded No. 8 in the 2006 NCAA Tournament, will host Navy (11-3) in the first round on Sunday, May 14 at the Multi-Sport Field. Face-off for the game is slated for 1 p.m.
Cannon assisted on Georgetown's first goal and scored a goal in the second quarter against the Nittany Lions. With the Hoyas trailing 8-4 in the third quarter, Cannon assisted on two of the team's three goals as the Blue and Gray pulled to within 8-7 before scoring twice in the final quarter to secure the win.
It was the 11th multi-point game for the sophomore attacker this season and his ninth multi-assist game. He has seven career games with at least six assists, including three this season. In 12 games, Cannon leads the Hoyas in scoring with 41 points. He has a team-high 28 assists and is tied for third on the team with 13 goals. Cannon's 28 assists this season are tied for the fourth-best mark in a single season at Georgetown with Neal Goldman (2002). He needs two more to pass Greg McCavera, who had 29 in 1998. In two years on the Hilltop, Cannon has played in 25 games and scored 64 points, notching 28 goals and 36 assists.
Also earning ECAC Honor Roll mention this week are freshman Jake Samperton (Bethesda, Md./Landon), who was named the League's Rookie of the Week, and junior middie Christiaan Trunz (Manhasset, N.Y./Chaminade), who won 13-of-23 face-offs and had four ground balls in the win at Penn State.
Samperton scored the third of Georgetown's three goals in a crucial third quarter as the team fought back from a four-goal deficit in the Penn State win. He has scored three goals and has two assists for five points. Trunz has helped the Hoyas to a No. 20 national ranking in face-offs. In the last four weeks Trunz, who ranks 22nd in the country individually, has won 56.6 percent of his face-offs (56-of-99). Overall this season Trunz has won 54.1 percent (119-of-220).of his face-offs and is second on the team with 39 ground balls.
The Hoyas maintained their No. 5 nationally ranking in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA)/STX and Inside Lacrosse Media Top 25 polls this week. Georgetown has been ranked among the top-five teams nationally in at least one of two polls in each of the last eight weeks.
The winner of the Navy-Georgetown game plays on Sunday, May 21 in Towson, Md. against the winner of a matchup between No. 1 Virginia and Notre Dame.
Georgetown enters the 2006 NCAA Tournament with an 11-2 record, including a 6-1 mark in the ECAC League. Georgetown and Navy have played 16 times, with the Hoyas leading the head-to-head series, 10-6. The Hoyas have won three of the last four meetings between the teams and hold a 6-2 advantage in games played at home. This will be the 10th-straight NCAA Tournament appearance for the Hoyas, making them one of only two schools nationwide to reach each of the last 10 postseason tournaments. The Blue and Gray have an all-time record of 8-9 in nine previous appearances, all under 17th-year head coach Dave Urick. They have advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals the last four years and in seven of the last eight seasons. The Hoyas will be looking to reach the Final Four for the first time since the 1999 season.
