Blue Team Edges Gray Team 3-2 in Fall Season Series
Nov. 3, 2006 Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team concluded its fall season on October 20-22 at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md. Assistant coach Matt Bok's Blue team took two of three from assistant coach Mark Van Ameyde's Gray team to earn the crown in the five-game series. In game three of the series on Friday, the Blue squad won 5-3 to take a 2-1 series advantage. Sophomore righty Jimmy Saris (Great Falls, Va./Langley/Duke) got the win, tossing 6.1 innings, striking out five and allowed just three earned runs for the Blue squad. Mike Hoy (Southlake Carroll, Texas/Southlake Carroll) recorded the save getting the final two outs including a flyout with the bases loaded in the seventh to end the game. Rob Begin (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) and Chip Malt (Boston, Mass./Buckingham Browne & Nichols) had two hits apiece for the winners. Begin also drove in three runs out of the leadoff spot in the order while Malt scored two runs. Senior catcher Brandon Davis (Poway, Calif./The Bishop's School) had two hits, including a homer and a double to knock in two RBI for the Gray team. Junior starter Erick Chandler (Somerset, N.J./Rutgers Prep) took the loss but pitched well fanning eight batters over 5.2 frames. On Saturday, October 21, Van Ameyde's Gray team knotted the series at 2-2 with a 13-5 win as they took advantage of a fifth inning error to score eight times in the frame. Grady McConnell (Capistrano, Calif./Capistrano Valley) earned the victory on the mound, fanning four hitters over six innings while yielding four earned runs and allowing just one walk. Greg Pustizzi (Medford, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) had four hits, including a homer to drive in four runs to go along with three runs scored. Davis and sophomore infielder Matthew Maranges (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit Prep) each had two hits and two RBI. Maranges scored two times. Matthew Bouchard (E. Greenwich, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) had three hits and scored three runs. Senior infielder Joe Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Chaminade) had two hits and two RBI. Begin's only hit of the day was a homer over the leftfield wall.
In Sunday's deciding fifth game, Bok's Blue team won 6-1 to the earn series victory. Freshman Alex Meyer (Pompton Plains, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) tossed five innings and struck out eight. The lefty allowed three hits and only one run. Hoy struck out three in his two innings of relief. Begin was once again the Blue team's offensive hero with a two-out, fourth inning grand slam. Dan Capeless (Centerville, Mass./Boston College) added a two-run homer in the second. Freshman lefty Derek DiGuglielmo (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Dobbs Ferry) plated the only Gray team with a fourth inning solo shot. |
