Twelve Georgetown Baseball Players Hitting the Diamond in Summer Leagues
June 28, 2006 Washington, D.C. - Twelve current Georgetown University baseball players are participating in various summer leagues in the summer of 2006. Three student-athletes - Matt Harrigan (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Acad.), Erick Chandler (Somerset, N.J./Rutgers Prep) and Matt Bouchard (E. Greenwich, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) are playing in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (www.necbl.com). Harrigan, who is playing with the Pittsfield (Mass.) Dukes, collected 13 hits and drove in 11 runs for the Hoyas during his sophomore season. Chandler is playing with the Vermont Mountaineers after sitting out the 2006 season following transferring from the University of Virginia. Bouchard is on the Newport (R.I) Gulls roster. Bouchard started in 55 of the 56 games he appeared in during his sophomore year, tying for the team-lead with 55 hits. The infielder ranked second on the team with 13 stolen bases and was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on May 1. Brandon Davis (Poway, Calif./The Bishop's School) is playing with the Mankato (Minn.) Moondogs of the 12-team Northwoods League (www.northwoodsleague.com). The catcher, who is now entering his senior year, set personal bests with four home runs, 40 RBI and 12 doubles in 2006. The 40 RBI led the Hoyas, as did his 10 multi-RBI games.
Warren Sizemore (Hamilton, Ohio/Ross) is on the Outer Banks Daredevil roster of the Coastal Plains League. (www.coastalplain.com) Sizemore ranked second on the Georgetown team with 36 strikeouts and 70 innings pitched last season. The hard throwing righty, who is returning to Georgetown for his final year of eligibility next season, struck out seven hitters and yielded just one walk through the early part of the Daredevil season. Greg Pustizzi (Medford, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) and Rob Begin (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) are playing in the Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate League (www.abccl.com). The ABCCL is comprised of eight teams that are located primarily in the central New Jersey area. Pustizzi, who batted .286 during his freshman season for the Hoyas, is playing with the Protocall Starz. Begin is playing with the Middletown Monarchs, where he is joined on the roster with five other BIG EAST players. Matthew Maranges (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit Prep) and Brian Sullivan (Maitland, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) are participating with the Orlando Shockers of Florida Collegiate Summer League (www.floridaleague.com). Maranges started in 41 of the 47 games he appeared in for Georgetown in 2006. The 6-0, 180-pound infielder ranked eighth on the team with 33 hits during his sophomore campaign. Sullivan sat out last season as he recovered from arm surgery. Daniel Kennedy (West Orange, N.J./Regis) is playing with the Rockville Express in the six-team Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League (www.ripkensrcollegebaseball.org). For the Hoyas in 2006, Kennedy, who finished is entering his sophomore year, ranked second in the BIG EAST and set a new school single-season record with nine saves. Jimmy Saris (Great Falls, Va./Langley) who has transferred to Georgetown after spending his freshman season at Duke is playing with the Bethesda Big Train and playing on the Hoya's home turf, Shirley Povich Field. Andy Ferich (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) is on the Quakertown (Pa.) Blazers roster of the Atlantic Collegiate League (www.acbl-online.com). Through the first 11 games of the 40-game summer season, Ferich fanned eight in eight innings for the Blazers. Ferich, who just completed his freshman season, struck out 11 batters in his first college start for Georgetown in a complete-game five hitter in a 3-2 win over Saint Joseph's. Junior lefthanded pitcher Michael Gaggioli (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) withdrew an invitation to pitch with the Chatham Athletics of the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League to rest his elbow. During the 2006 season, the Hoyas won 10 BIG EAST games, the most league wins since 1986 and posted a 24-32 overall record. |
