Georgetown Baseball Sweeps West Virginia in Saturday BIG EAST Twinbill, 5-4 and 7-6

Bethesda, Md. - The Georgetown University baseball team received great pitching and some timely hitting to sweep a BIG EAST doubleheader against visiting West Virginia on Saturday at Shirley Povich Field. The Hoyas scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning in game one to win, 5-4. In game two, relievers Grady McConnell (Capistrano, Calif./Capistrano Valley) and Daniel Kennedy (W. Orange, N.J./Regis) combined to allow just one hit in three innings as GU took the nightcap, 7-6. With the wins, Georgetown improves to 23-26 and 9-11 against BIG EAST foes and continues to hold their own destiny for one of the eight BIG EAST Tournament spots.

Game one starter Warren Sizemore (Hamilton, Ohio/Ross) allowed three earned runs over eight innings to earn the victory on the hill. In game two, senior Stephen Burns (Westchester, Pa./Malvern Prep) worked six innings and junior catcher Brandon Davis hit a big two-run homer in the sixth inning. Kennedy earned the save in both games of the doubleheader to set a new school single-season save record with nine.

Senior outfielder Timmy Jones (Ledgewood, N.J./Morristown) collected four hits and three runs scored on the day while sophomore Matthew Bouchard (E. Greenwich, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) recorded three hits and scored three runs.

In game one, the teams were tied at 2-2 after just two innings. WVU plated single runs in the first two innings. Kuhn doubled to left center with two strikes to lad off the game. Nelms recorded a bunt single to put runners at the corners. Jenkins the reached on a fielder's choice to drive in a run. In the second inning, the Mountaineers loaded the bases with one out. Kuhn lofted a sacrifice fly to drive in Bowling who led off the frame with a single.
 

 

Georgetown answered with two runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 2-2. Dargen led off with a walk and moved to second on Bouchard's single. After both runners stole second and third, Dargen scored on a wild pitch before Matthew Harrigan collected a RBI with a ground out.

Mountaineer junior starter Dan Leatherman and Hoya starter Warren Sizemore cruised through the next three innings before both teams scored runs in the sixth. In the Mountaineer top half, after the first two batters were retired, David Carpenter was hit by a pitch before Adam White singled to right field to put runners on first and second. Tyler Kuhn then singled up the middle to give WVU a 3-2 lead. The Hoyas once again answered with a run in the home half. Jones doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Mark McLaughlin. Dargen tied the game at 3-3 with a RBI single to left.

In the WVU eighth, Bowling drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on Bill Wooten's sacrifice bunt. One out later Bowling moved to third on a passed ball before scoring on a GU fielding error for a 4-3 lead.

Georgetown re-gained the lead in the eighth. Jones Mark McLaughlin (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle) started the inning with consecutive singles. After runners moved to first and third with two outs, Bouchard singled home the game-tying run and Davis reached on a West Virginia error as Drew Dargen (Edmund, Okla./Edmund North) came home with the go-ahead run.

Kennedy worked around a one-out walk for the save.

WVU starter Dan Leatherman struck out eight in eight innings of work and allowed four earned runs. Tyler Kuhn and Adam White both collected two hits.

In game two, Georgetown led 4-3 after three innings. The Mountaineers took a 6-4 advantage with three runs in the sixth. WVU scored two unearned runs in the frame and got hits by Casey Bowling and Michael Burger.

In the bottom of the sixth, Davis hammered a one-out, two-run homer to leftfield, his second of the season to drive in Bouchard who walked. In the seventh, the Hoyas took a 7-6 lead. Matthew Harrigan (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Bros. Acad) led off with a pinch-hit single and moved to third on a Jones double. McLaughlin notched a RBI with a groundout.

WVU reliever Levi Maxwell fanned seven Hoya hitters over six innings. Bowling and Burger both ripped three hits.

Georgetown and West Virginia (29-17, 9-11 BE) will take part in the series finale at Shirley Povich Field on Sunday, May 7. First pitch is slated for noon. Live audio of the game can be heard on www.guhoyas.com with Mike Vaillancourt calling the action.
