Bouchard's Single Lifts Georgetown Past South Florida, 4-3

April 29, 2006

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - Sophomore second baseman Matthew Bouchard (E. Greenwich, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) hit a two-run single in the seventh inning and sophomore reliever Dan Kennedy (W. Orange, N.J./Regis) picked up his seventh save of the season, lifting Georgetown to a 4-3 win over South Florida on Saturday afternoon at Red McEwen Field in Tampa, Florida.

The Hoyas improve to 20-25 overall and 6-11 in the BIG EAST, while South Florida falls to 20-24 and 9-11 in the conference.

South Florida had taken a 3-1 lead with a pair of runs in the fourth, but the Hoyas cut the lead to a run in the sixth before scoring what proved to be the decisive runs in the seventh.

The Hoyas loaded the bases with one out after senior Timmy Jones (Ledgewood, N.J./Morristown) hit a leadoff single and Bulls reliever Nick Maranago walked senior Mark McLaughlin (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle) and Ryan Craft (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School). After registering the first out of the inning, Bouchard singled up the middle, scoring Jones and McLaughlin to give Georgetown a 4-3 lead.

Senior starter Stephen Burns (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep) retired the side in order in the seventh, but walked Kris Howell to lead off the bottom of the eighth. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second and Burns handed the ball to junior Mark Dutmers (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview). Dutmers recorded the second out of the inning, but a single from Brandin Daniel put runners on the corners with two out for Kennedy, who induced a ground ball out to end the threat.

In the ninth, the Bulls would put two runners on with one out, but Kennedy picked off Consolmango at second base and then issued a fly ball out to give the Hoyas the exciting win.

Ty Taborelli scored the first run of the game in bottom of the first to give USF a 1-0 lead. The Hoyas responded with a run in the top of the second on a squeeze play by left fielder Derek deGrijs (Nashville, Tenn./Goodpasture). Bouchard hit a leadoff double and moved to third on a single from Brandon Davis (Poway, Calif./The Bishop's School) before scoring on deGrijs' hit.

The USF lead jumped out to a 3-1 advantage in the bottom of the fourth. Nick Cardieri drove in a run with a double and Taborelli's single gave the Bulls their largest lead of the game.

Georgetown will close out its three-game series with South Florida on Sunday, April 30. First pitch is slated for noon.
